These are the best mascaras of 2024

Mascara creates a great look. We tried various products in the big mascara test – looking for the best mascara for long, complete, and curved eyelashes

It is a beautiful basic that almost all women use every day. And yet it’s not that easy to find the perfect mascara.

A mascara should give off an intense color but not so strong that the eyelashes clump together. It should also give the eyelashes a good swing and, at the same time, provide more volume.

And: the longer, the better. A mascara should therefore create an eyelash with endlessly long eyelashes.

So what to do to find the best mascara among the many offers? We have tested the most popular mascaras – this is how they performed in our test.

The best mascaras in the test

Best All Round Mascara:Too Faced “Better

Sex”

One of the most popular mascaras, Kylie Jenner, swears by Too Faced’s ‘Better Than Sex mascara. The top seller also did well in our test, and we consider it the best all-around mascara.

Summary of the editorial

Team:

The hype is no coincidence. In our test, too, Faced’s “Better Than Sex” mascara came out on top. It is high-quality intense and provides a lot of volume and length with its unique brush shape. The deep black color creates more fullness, and thanks to the hourglass shape of the brush, the lashes also appear longer. However, there are minus points for the very slight swing. If you want beautifully curved eyelashes, you should use an eyelash curler beforehand.

For all curve lovers and contact lens wearers: the ‘Couvrance’ mascara by Avéne. Avéne’s hypoallergenic mascara defines lashes with a rubber brush and provides a curl. It is very well tolerated and protects sensitive eyes.

Best mascara for more volume: Benefit “BADgal BANG.”

The second product from the Benefit brand to make it onto this list: the “BADgal BANG” mascara. It is equipped with ultra-light aero particles, and the material is otherwise used in space travel and should defy gravity.

Volume and definition in one – the “Benefit BADgal Mascara” takes care of that. The flexible brush, which optimally adapts to the eyelashes, was particularly convincing in the test. The mascara also scores points in terms of durability, and it lasts all day.

Best Waterproof Mascara: Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara

Especially in summer, it is worth using waterproof mascara. Whether swimming or sweating it out at the gym, using waterproof mascara is a great way to prevent smudging. Our favorite is Lancome’s Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara.

Summary of the editorial

Team:

The Lancome Hypnose Drama Waterproof Mascara is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a waterproof look. It provides a substantial volume and has a perfect shelf life. In the application, however, there were problems with the test. Since the brush is relatively thick, small mistakes occasionally happen.

Best Vegan Mascara: Gaya Mascara

Vegan natural cosmetics and still high performance – is that possible? Gaya’s mascara is a good choice if you want a natural product that is gentle on the skin and eyes.

Summary of  editorial team:

The ideal mascara for natural cosmetics and vegans provides a great look with more volume and a perfect length. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last as long throughout the day as other mascaras in the test.

Best Cheap Mascara: Maybelline Colossal Volume Express Mascara

You could indeed find it in your youth room: the “Maybelline Jade The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara.” The cheap yellow mascara is an absolute classic.

little definition

brush

bushy brush made of synthetic fiber bristles

lots of colors, slight mistakes happen

a little heavier

Summary of the editorial team:

If you don’t want to spend too much money, you can’t go wrong with the Maybelline “The Colossal Volum’ Express.” However, in terms of performance, it cannot quite keep up with the high-end products from our test. Even if it gives intense color and makes the lashes more voluminous, it lacks the definition of the lashes and the lengthening effect. In addition, the mascara smears more often than other mascaras in the test.

Mascara Trend: Milk Makeup “KUSH High Volume Mascara”

Editor Kyra took a look at American makeup trends on a trip to the USA. One new product exciting right now is Milk Makeup’s, KUSH Mascara. It does without parabens, sulfates, silicones, perfumes, and animal testing is vegan and nourishes the eyelashes with hemp seed oil, which is currently very popular in cosmetics.

Not only color but also care at the same time. Milk’s ‘KUSH’ mascara is trending for a reason. Even if it doesn’t lengthen the eyelashes as much as other mascaras, it provides excellent results and convinces delicious

How to find the right mascara for you

material

A distinction is made between synthetic fiber and rubber brushes. While synthetic fiber brushes have bristles in a spiral shape, the strands of rubber brushes are usually far apart and are molded in one piece.

Synthetic fiber bristles can have different styling properties: hard or soft, short, long, dense, or widely spaced to create different looks.

Rubber bristles mainly aim at an exact definition and separation and lengthening of the eyelashes.

shape

Voluminous, thick brush

Do you have naturally full, long eyelashes? Then you can undoubtedly use a thick brush, and the bristles are usually a little shorter and optimally support the natural shape of the eyelashes.

An hourglass-shaped lash brush reaches the lengths of the outer lashes, creating plenty of volume in the middle.

Curved brush

A curved brush creates a curl effect, and it adapts optimally to the lash line and ensures an intensive curl even with straight lashes.

Thin, straight brush

This shape is suitable for all eye and eyelash shapes and creates a subtle look. In addition, the brush separates the individual lashes better than a voluminous brush and ensures extreme lengths.

Straight brush tapering to the end

Perfect volume and meticulously separated hairs – this brush shape ensure that. Plus, what can precisely apply the lower lashes with the thin tip.

Conclusion: Our favorites

Our favorite is Too Faced’s hourglass-shaped ‘Better Than Sex mascara.

We can recommend Gaya’s mascara to all vegans and fans of natural

This is  how we tested

We subjected the nine mascaras to an extensive individual test for a meaningful test result. For this purpose, five test criteria were defined, which are given an individual percentage weighting depending on the relevance of the criterion.

Selection of products

When selecting the products, attention was paid to objective aspects, such as the spread of the product on the market and a balanced selection of cheap and high-priced products. (Status: 06.02.2020)

The test criteria

• Brush (10 percent)
• First impressions count: does the mascara have a synthetic fiber brush or a rubber brush? What do the bristles of the meeting look like?
• Application (30 percent)
• The application of mascara is crucial to the result. How easy is the mascara to apply? Does she crumble?
• Effect (20 percent)
• The most important factor: does the mascara live up to its promises? Does it bring the eyelashes into the desired shape?
• Durability (30 percent)
• Ideally, mascara should last the whole day. We test whether the mascara loses intensity over time.
• Make-up removal (10 percent)
• Can the mascara be removed with a cotton pad and some eye makeup remover? If the rubbing is too vigorous, the eyelashes and the delicate skin around the eyes suffer.
All the results of the test criteria add up to the overall star result.
